Student of the Month

Justine Lauren

Justine Lauren is the mother of two children, Jordan (11) and Jadzia (8) and married to Kyle. She has been practicing at Vital Yoga for the past three years. She just completed the Vital Vinyasa training this past spring and is currently in the Warrior Academy training. Justine’s commitment to her practice, her family and her community inspired us to honor her as our Student of the Month.

What is the biggest change you have noticed since you have started practicing with Vital?
“To be completely honest, I am bi-polar. I feel everything in my body, the more I have flexed it, used it and treated it well, the better my life is. The yoga has grounded me, reduced my racing thoughts and lessened my erratic behavior. The way I feel after class, nothing else makes me feel that way. If you come to class in the morning, it sets the tone for your whole day, If your practice in the evening, it sheds the energy of the day before bedtime. I practice five or six days a week, and coming to class seeing other people who practice regularly too, gives me a community of people I can relate to.

What advice would you give people who are new to yoga—or to Vital?
Try a variety of classes. I just added Jivamukti to my weekly schedule. I saw the description on the schedule and thought, oh chanting, that’s not really my thing, but then I met the teacher at the coffee shop, and thought, she seems cool, I’ll try it. Same with Anusara®, I didn’t think from the description that it would be hardcore enough for me, but now I’m in love with it. Try everything, even if you think it’s not for you, you may be surprised. Now I practice Vital Roots, Power, Jivamukti and Anusara®. I don’t think I’m the first person to have their life saved by yoga. I love it so much.

How did yoga save your life?
Yoga is a starting point to make your life better, to be able to deal with hardships and enjoy life more. It is the most amazing coping mechanism to deal with anything that is hard. If I would have gone to yoga while I was going through my divorce, it would have gone a lot smoother!

Is that why you want to teach?
I can’t think of anything better than sharing something I’m this passionate about. I love yoga more than anything, besides my immediate family.
