What should I expect from my first class?
The most important thing to remember is that your practice is an ongoing exploration. Each pose is an experiment; each day is different. Go slowly and listen to your body. Eventually, you will learn to determine when you are pushing yourself too hard, and when it’s time to start pushing a bit harder. And it may sound funny, but try to remember to breathe! Have you ever been in a challenging situation and realized that you were actually holding your breath? It’s an instinctual reaction, and we’ve all done it—but it’s totally counter-productive. Breathing deeply, even during unfamiliar or challenging situations, keeps us present in the moment. Paying attention not only prevents injury, but is at the very heart of what yoga is all about.
